There were times a couple of months back when I feel so lost and I’d ask – what to read?! It’s like I have this inner urge to read something really worth my time and yet don’t know what book to read. I almost envy Hubs who can get inside any bookstore we pass by and come out with three or four books in tow. Having no recommendations, I almost always buy the ones with the “international bestsellers” tag or ones which won a certain literary prize.
Hence I was really happy when I came across goodreads.com, featured by Aleng on her blog. It’s like finding a cornucopia, a cornucopia of books!
Came across The Prophets of Ghost Ants in goodreads. Can’t wait to get a copy of this one!!!
Anyways, this was the latest book I’ve finished reading a couple weeks back.
It was the Orange Award winner for 2011 so I was a bit curious with the book. This is the first time I’ve read a book written by someone 5 years younger than me and I must say she has a great career ahead of her. But I’d have to say I was a bit disappointed about how the book ended, almost feeling like I wasted my time reading it. Her narration is quite good though and young as she is and yet already award-winning at that, she has much time to improve her craft.
Was able to get a prized possession last weekend – my much awaited IQ84 English-translated copy, all three books, in one big volume! Felt like I waited for such a looong time for it’s translation that I almost jumped for joy when I found this hardbound three-book volume.
Hardbound as it is, of course I can’t cart it around with me. It’s gonna be a bedtime book. But I have to hurry reading it. Hubs is next in line. Haha.
I needed a book to read in between train rides and while on a queue (been working late recently that my free time for reading is almost only during train rides. Huff). I’m carting this around right now.
So much acclaim for this book. But at some parts, I’m bored although it comes pretty interesting on some parts. I’m yet to discover why it’s categorized as a science fiction though.
At the time I bought IQ84, I also came across the Tokyo Michelin guide at a discounted price. The 2012 issue is already out but this discounted old issue is already fine with me. Can’t wait for a good food experience soon!
Wow Marj these are good books…. i am actually waiting for my ordered books from Fully Booked online to arrive. Those were The Tiger’s Wife and Never Let Me Go along with Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand . It’s taking so long and i can’t wait!
We’re reading the same books! Yey! TÊa is good in storytelling but I can still find some loopholes in her story. Nevertheless, it was interesting. I’m still barely 1/4 with Never Let Go so I can’t say much yet. I just try to read books with really really good reviews or those which won awards kasi I am such a slow reader as I take time in creating a mental image of the scene haha.
Me too…slow reader. Dili yata nako maabot akong quota this year.haha! I envy people who can read one book in one seating. I hate myself because if there is one book that I love, I will read it without sleeping.haha! As in eyebags and lipong2x sa office kay walay tulog.
Exactly El. Fast readers sure are lucky. Hubs is one and I’d sometimes ask him “did you really read it???” haha. Todo imagine kasi ng scene, mao dugay haha.
ahem.. ma fast reader lang ko if ganahan sa book, tho i will read what ever is available kaya whenever i will be at Book Sale, i always get home having 5-8 books depende sa presyo of course! I also check the ratings and read the ones that were rated best !
Marj! Do check this out (http://booksneeze.com/) – you will love this =)
Oh wow! Very interesting nga! Thanks for this LÊ. And I’d agree with them. Good books are contagious! đ
I dont just imagine, I read the favorite lines or parts again and again before moving to the next.lol
Hahaha. In short, matagal maka-move on. Hehe
Elz, at least read over and over again ka lang.. ako, i have to copy it pa sa power notebook, then may underline with a colored pen effect pa ako sa book, if a colored pen is nowhere near where I am reading then I have to look for it first before i continue, making it more dugay ever! đ
Hubs does that as well, underline text while reading. Or rather, “sideline” as a friend has pointed out kasi Japanese text is vertical. Hehe
hi marj! đ salamat sa special mention. i’m really lovin’ Goodreads, kasi kapag nasa library ako, na-ooverwhelm ako sa mga book. andami. too many book, too little time! kaya before i would in, naka-ready na yung mga hihiramin ko, or if di sila available, irerequest ko muna. đ happy reading!
You’re welcome Aleng. đ but above it, thanks for featuring the site. I can imagine how you feel in a library. I feel it too, sometimes I’d feel lost on what to read haha. There’s too little time with too many things to do kaya it’d be best to spend our time on worthwhile books lang. And Goodreads is one great venue to find good books referrals. I’m dying to buy na the Prophets of Ghost Ants, which I found in goodreads albeit I find the title funny haha. So much acclaim for it!! Anyways, thanks and happy reading as well! đ
You’re right about Goodreads! definitely a site where I love to hangout đ
