I’ve come to look forward to the Coming of Age day or what the Japanese call as Seijin no Hi (成人式) – that second Monday of January holiday wherein the young 20 year olds of Japan are celebrated and encouraged as they cross the threshold into adulthood. I look forward to it not because I can participate in the festivities but because it is such to sight to behold the streets of Japan teeming with young adults garbed in their best kimonos, kimonos so impressive in design you’d wonder how much it costs.
I was on my way to the office when I saw these young women whose pictures were being taken by their parents. I asked if they can indulge me to take their picture and they happily gave their consent.

The men wear their kimono too but really it’s the women whom I look forward to see because of how elaborate their kimonos are. Makes one wish for a girl in the family. 🙂 🙂
Beautiful kimonos! How much would they usually cost?
The last time I had kimono trial, the sales lady garbed me in a kimono that would have had cost around 200k pesos, and that was much simpler than these ones, although medyo high grade ang cloth nung triny ko. So I’d think this is average price. Kaya yung yukata very popular for summer kasi one can buy as cheap as 5k pesos. 😀

exactly Le. Kaya we didn’t consider na talaga to wear a kimono during the reception kasi aside from the practical fact that we don’t know anyone in Pinas who can expertly don on me the kimono, the cost of the kimono is super mas mahal pa kaysa kay Veluz hehe 🙂

Bongga! the kimonos are beautiful….they seem to look heavy? dili ba siya bug-at Marj?
Bongga jud Cel especially up close and especially when you get to see how many layers there and how amazing it is kasi there are times the inner kimono layer is just as pretty as the outside one even when oftentimes it is not visible. Nope it’s not heavy. But one thing is that it is tight. As in huot jud kaayo hehe. But I didn’t mind the tightness at all. 🙂 depends siguro
Hmmm interesting and that is good na it is super tight… if it can help me slim down, then, suot ko ana everyday! Ha ha!, anyway..this would be among the “must-do” if ever i’ll get a chance to fly to Japan… WEAR A KIMONO and pose as geisha, mayo na lang.. for once i’ll be as white as i can get. For now, atang-atang sa ko promo sa Cebu Pacific! 🙂
That would be a great chance jud Cel! What’s even better is that airport for Cebu Pac flights is in Osaka which is nearer Kyoto compared to Tokyo. I remember there was a kimono rental place in Kyoto at around 10k yen if I remember right.
