life with a toddler: the joy of achievement

Probably one of the most difficult things a parent has to do is knowing when to give your child a helping hand and when to hold yourself at bay and let your child be. You don’t want your child to be crippled with dependence and yet you don’t want to see your child helpless.

Yet again, I had that moment early this evening, seemingly mundane though it may be for older kids. I was then putting my coat in the closet, intent on helping Yui with her layers after depositing our bags. Before I turned to her though, she called my attention and was already handing over to me her outermost winter vest. She earned a praise for this since she was able to work through the zipper. She then went on unzipping her second jacket. I know this one will be more difficult than the vest because of the almost tight sleeves. And so as she struggled I was also struggling within, whether I should go and help her already. A lump was already forming in my throat and 99% of me wanted to assist her especially since she called out “Mommy” already.

But thankfully, I sided with the 1% of me and held my ground. To remove the lump on my throat, I cheered her on, told her she can do it, told her to have some strategy. She kept an eye contact with me and I tried to muster an encouraging expression, a smile on my face while cheering her on.

When she was finally able to remove the jacket, the look on her face was priceless; there’s that unmistakable joy of achievement for doing something by herself. So glad I held on. If I had helped her, I would have had robbed her of that joy of achievement.

We pray we’ll have the wisdom to always know when to lend a hand or when to just sit back and encourage.

Goodbye, Hello

And just like that, it’s been a month already since we moved to our new house! Still not quite settled but we’re loving the place even more, by the day. There are some hitches to adjust to, think long waiting list at the neighbourhood (excellent) daycare hence we have to still go to previous
daycare. Yet even when it’s hectic, it has it’s advantages, think learning to be right on time (and I’m talking about a mere minute, singular!) to catch the bus. Yes, finally a (pretty) place to call our own! Thankful, grateful.

But that doesn’t mean to say we didn’t miss our old place. The new one is by far more beautiful; yet the old one also has its charm topping off the good memories we had there. We know we’ll miss it so in that we were emotional during our last visit there for the house inspection.

More than four years ago, Hubs and I fell in love with this place the first time we saw it.

Thank you Soreado!

Happy New Year 2015!!

The end of the year 2014, just before Christmas, we finally moved in to our new place, a place we could call our own. It’s been quite a busy year preparing for it (started the search from October last year) and finally just before the New Year, our hard work came to fruition. We couldn’t be thankful enough.

Not only with the new home, God has been faithful and has yet again showed us His goodness and mercy in many facets of our lives this year. He answers prayers. In the best way at the right time. Kore kara mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu (From now as well, please take care of us Lord).

Thankful. Joyful. Hopeful.

moving

all the house dust got unsettled from all the packing. End result, we had to wear masks inside the house and open the windows even when it’s wintry cold. She didn’t complain at all and was happily playing with whatever toy she could get her hands on. Albeit we think she enjoyed climbing boxes the most.

a Wonderful God

This autumn had been exceptionally beautiful. With our schedule being loaded, preparing for something new in our lives, we didn’t have the luxury this year to go sightseeing autumn’s wonderful colours. Nevertheless, no matter how busy we were (and once there was a week when our hearts were really troubled), we still had the chance to pause and try to catch our breath as we looked at God’s wonderful creation. Cloudless blue skies, tree trunks so dark, ground matted with yellow, gold and red, colours heightened by the setting sun. Snow-topped Fuji against the backdrop of the blue sky; against a golden sky; against a sky with hue of pinks, purples, reds and blues. My heart can only sing praises of You, dear God as we look on.

I was walking down the stairs from Church when I met this couple going the opposite way. This particular stairs is actually quite a challenge to climb most especially during summer even for young people. But this old couple found a fun way to scale it by doing Rock, Paper, Scissors/Jenkenpoy/Jak en Poy all the way up. Keeping the sweetness and fun and humour all these years. Inspiring. We pray that A and M will too.
