Nine Lessons and Carols

The email for choir singers came 3rd week of September; calling singers who can devote their Sunday lunches for practice in preparation for the Nine Lessons and Carols – the ecumenical service in which nine lessons/readings from the Bible are read interspersed with Carol singing. For The Sacred Heart Cathedral and Christ Church, this tradition has gone on for fifty years.

When I read the email, there was only one thing my heart and head said – join! Some logical part of me reminded me how busy we are this last quarter of the year because of the moving. And joining the practice meant less time yet again for bonding with Yui and Hubs since I already have my Nihongo class very Saturday morning. But Hubs was supportive and told me to follow my heart. And so join I did.

It was worth it. The practices in itself were a joy for me. With every song, with every high note it’s like I’m lifting my voice to God, singing his praise for the wonderful blessings He gave us. With every pianissimo, it’s like I’m whispering to Him what was in my heart.

This evening, as we sing the last note for every song, as we looked at Fr. Andrew (our choir director this evening) closing his hand so the choir would end the note, a smile plays at the corner of my mouth, a praise springs forth from my heart with the words “thank you Lord for making us sing that song beautifully”. I didn’t have any solo parts but I can truly say that I felt so fulfilled singing my soprano parts and even more so when people told me after the service that the sopranos sounded really good.

As I was singing, I was also thanking God of how supportive Hubs has been for me on this. He was really very tired from all the packing, but he took care of Yui and ran around with her at the park outside the church when yui already got bored sitting on the pew. I know God was also moving Hubs because as I was urging him that we leave already (after some snacks and chat with the choir and congregation), he told me that we should pray our thanksgiving right there on the church pew.

We actually missed a Christmas party with friends this evening. The party would have been fun! But I know we were where we should be.

As we walked home, we passed by the illuminated America Yama Park and Motomachi. A beautiful sight to cap a beautiful night.

World Fiesta Yokohama

We wanted to go to some park after church so we decided to walk from the church to Yamashita Park. There were a lot of stopovers along Motomachi (including a store for kids/babies that sells fashionable and affordable clothes – a shop to take note of and to go to when it’s sale season. Yes, we just window shopped haha. I guess most moms wait for sale season?). When we finally reached Yamashita Park, we were surprised of the crowd and the booths. And people wearing their national costumes. It was only then that we learned about the World Fiesta Yokohama, an event showcasing the culture of countries around the world. There were local foods (we just salivated at the aroma. We couldn’t buy because the queue in all booths were long!!), ethnic music, and dance performances (we didn’t hang around the stage so we couldn’t see the dances though we did hear the music), as well as folk crafts (very interesting!).

This little girl was making beautiful music from this wooden instrument (I couldn’t catch the name!) so much so that the shop owner decided to accompany her. Beautiful music.

Our loot from this Balinese shop – den den daiko. It’s japanese-y yes but the art is definitely not.

Yui was sleeping when we bought this. So when we gave her this after she woke up, she just wouldn’t part with it and enjoyed hearing the sound she’s creating.

And so she was creating music while she stared at the sea, looked at the birds and people/dog-watched.

It was so hot (very unusual for mid October!) but we weren’t able to bring her hat (and no sunblock too! oh dear) so we used her Peter Rabbit towel to protect her from the heat. It reminded us of Red Riding Hood and milk maids haha!

Food food!

For Czech Republic, it was dolls of course. Wanted to buy this caterpillar wooden toy but it was just so expensive at 2500yen!

There were so many countries around, from Asia to Europe, from Ecuador to Nepal to Peru to USA to Egypt. But we didn’t see a Philippine booth. Probably because the Filipino community just recently held Barrio Fiesta also in Yamashita park.

We stayed in the quieter part of the park for a while, sitting on the bench, the dad sleeping, the mom and baby people/sea/bird/dog-watching. Stayed there until Yui cried out of boredom and so we have to go.

On we walked through Nihon Odori and chanced upon a band playing jazz music. The baby was delighted, the mom and dad agreeing saxophone is just so sexy.

We also saw some Yokohama mascots walking about and took the chance to have some photos with them. We’re not sure if the baby liked them haha.

Oh. One really remarkable thing. As it was a festival, of course it was held mostly on the street and the park. Away from malls, away from institutions. When we came by the Yokohama Stadium, one of the booths that was set up was one dedicated for nursing moms and for changing diapers. Wow, so typically Japanese, very thoughtful.

We had quite a walk, from 12 to 6. So now all three are hanging their feet up, the baby copying the dad and mom.

Thankful for family days and festivals! 🙂

Blancheur nail salon

I can’t reach my feet anymore. Hence, even when it costs TEN TIMES it would in the Philippines, I had to have my toenails done in a nail salon here. And mind you, that’s just basic pedi, no scrub nor spa nor paraffin wax.

Anyways, we settled with Blancheur nail salon in Motomachi. Thankfully, their salon has good ventilation and doesn’t smell of nail polish at all hence pretty safe for preggers.

They’ve quite a number of nail color selection and I’m really quite happy with the color I chose as it blended well with my feet color.

What was amazing with this salon though was that the woman who did my nails has incredibly made-up nails. Yet despite her very long nails, she did an excellent job on my toenails.
