life with a grade schooler: planking laps

So, we have this ongoing friendly competition: planking laps. We’d each take our turn planking and time each other. You record my lapses on my phone and I record your lapses on my old phone.

Today, you made your record high of 3 minutes!! You alternated between side planks (great for your obliques!), elbow/forearm, hand, mountain climbers. Three minutes!

Determined to outdo you, I geared for my turn. But was shocked to see that record of all my previous laps have been erased!!

You tried to comfort me by hugging me and patting my back. But you hit my back so forcefully it hurt.

So I start my scratch again and today got 2 minutes 4 sec! You’re actually my senpai for planking; nevertheless I’m proud of my two minutes. 😂

the fight with influenza and the feat of an Olympian

I thought we could get away with it. Unfortunately, you caught it. I was busy in the kitchen the other Saturday, preparing for your best friend’s and her family’s arrival when you said “ちからがでない (I don’t have the strength)” in reply to me telling you to change your clothes. It was only then that I noticed you had fever. Your best friend and her sister came; and in fairness to you, you entertained them as much as you can, ate side by side with Saki, whispering some secret to each other’s ears. But after lunch, you took from the bedroom your comfort blankies and nestled comfortably in the sofa. Your energy was already spent. Visitors of course had to go home early.

We thought it was just the usual colds because you were still sleeping, eating and drinking well, temperature wasn’t too high. But a visit to the doctor confirmed you had the B type influenza, the one not covered by the vaccine (our first brush, and I hope our last).

And so we spent the last ten days inside home except for the three instances that we had to go visit clinics. Your Dad and I had to slather ourselves with essentials oils (diluted of course) as our protection from getting infected. Doctor said you’re contagious up to today. Thankfully, we hadn’t contracted your virus (and I hope I’m not saying this too early because I want to say the EOs really works! And I can’t afford to be off from work for another week). I had body aches though; probably from lack of exercise because you just want me by your side in the bed.

This evening, I went to your room, intending to ask you to finish your drawings so we could take a bath as tomorrow’s our big day after a week-long leave. You had your back to the door but I know something was wrong because your shoulders were slumped. The moment I asked you if you were ok, the dam broke. You bawled and bawled. I finally understood what bothered you. You wanted to draw a cute dog but you couldn’t do it; or rather your hands couldn’t do what you had in mind and it’s making you frustrated.

When in the future baby, you get to be a Mom, you would probably understand that in that instance, you were not the only one who was broken-hearted. I was broken hearted too. Thankfully you listened to me as I tried to comfort you. I reminded you of the figure skaters who did excellently in the Olympics (Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno bagged gold and silver!) and they too had to practice and practice and practice. That for one to be excellent at something, we need to practice everyday.

Thankfully you listened. And I pray and hope you will persevere and will have a determined heart like our Olympic winners.

life with a toddler: when Mom is on forced bed rest 

When at home on a weekend or holiday, I rarely take an afternoon nap; unless of course I’ve caught terrible colds and cough. I consider those afternoons as a “me time” which is mostly to read or do the week’s ironing whilst listening to music. Truthfully, I welcome those ironing moments as it gives me the quiet time to reflect and think and yet be productive still (sheepish grin).  

Almost two weeks ago, Yui caught a high fever that’s lasted for almost a week. Thankfully, she got over it already. Truth be told, it was one of the most difficult time we had a parents. And as expected, I followed after. It’s worrisome, this tonsillitis, as I have an impending business trip – I have to put the house in order before my flight and of course I have to prepare for the task at hand. 

Yesterday (a Monday), I went to the office after visiting the clinic (my second doctor in a week) to make sure to issue some deliverables that may be required for my business trip; thinking of issuing them ASAP so that I can go home and take two days leave to recuperate from my tonsillitis and recover my voice. My boss learned I had 38degC fever over the weekend and strongly asked me to go home to rest. But my drive to knot loose ends was stronger so I told him I will stay until I’ve issued the last document. This left a small smile on his face. One hour after, he again strongly told me to go home (see, he is normally a scary person). My answer: one last document and I’ll be going home in 15 minutes. That same small smile on him again. And yes, I’m always headstrong when I’m driven with a passion; aren’t we always are?

And so now I’m on forced bed rest when even on a weekend, I don’t take naps. Forced because I know I have to rest to recover fast and prepare for my trip. Forced because I know this time, I really did maxed out my immune system. I can’t even do my “relaxing” ironing because it makes me dizzy. 

When us working moms living away from our parents get sick, it really poses a challenge. Yet a reminder for me not to overdo things. 

Yet, there’s so much to be thankful for. First of course is Hubs, who has been doing a great job taking care of Yui that our little one is all smiles and giggles recently. Yui’s sensitive side too, is more apparent during times like this. When she sees me lying in bed, she lies down beside me and holds my hand, giving me a smile whenever I open my eyes. What a sweet child you are anak. And your Dad and I are so thankful to God for giving you to us. 

Komeraku’s Ochazuke

It was unexpectedly cold today so I opted to buy ochazuke from my favourite bento shop for lunch. Ah. Simple but definitely Goodfood! 🙂
Salmon flakes. Nori. Rice crackers. Pickled vegetables. Dashi (fish broth) stock.

and hurray! I can finally post photos! Am not sure of the reason though but I did two things – update my iOS and deleted some apps to have more storage. Now, I-have-to-find-time to catch up with blog backlogs.
